This gallery is of blue whale spouts, behavior and body. When the blue whale surfaces from the deep it blows the water out if its lungs before breathing in fresh air. The spout can be as high as 11 meters (35 feet) high and is visible as far as 5-8 km (3-5 miles) away.
Adult blue whales consume approximately 4 tons of krill each day. Between 12 and 80 individual blue whales spend several weeks off Loreto in late winter to feed on the krill which is carried here via the currents.
